Trumpvakten

Ni har vid det här laget säker hört om boken som satte igång världens cirkus i Washington DC igår. Michael Wolff heter författaren till boken som heter Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House och som ska publiceras nästa vecka. De citat jag plockat ut är tagna från New York Magazine. Enjoy.

1. Wolffs bok hävdar att snart sagt ingen i kampanjen trodde på seger, men också att det inte ansågs illa. Trump var nämligen ute efter att stärka sitt brand, göra sig ännu kändare i världen. Det talades om ett eget Trump tv-bolag. Även en förlust sågs av Trump som en seger.
“This is bigger than I ever dreamed of,” he told Ailes a week before the election. “I don’t think about losing, because it isn’t losing. We’ve totally won.”

2. När Trump låg tolv procent bakom Clinton i augusti 2016 hade Trump inga förhoppningar om att vinna. När miljardären Robert Mercer ville ge kampanjen pengar undrade Trump varför. När samma man ville ha nya krafter in i kampanjledningen var Trump likgiltig och undrade bara varför någon ville göra det.
“This thing,” he told the Mercers, “is so fucked up.”

3. Wolff låter förstå att de flesta ansåg det vara lyckat att vara med i en kampanj som nästan vinner. Den pensionerade generalen Mike Flynn, som fick sparken efter ett par veckor på posten som den nationella säkerhetsrådgivaren, varnades före valdagen att det inte hade varit fiffigt att ta 45 000 dollar i arvode för ett tal i Ryssland. Hans svar var klargörande.

“Well, it would only be a problem if we won,” ­Flynn assured them.

4. Som sagt, allt byggde på att kampanjen skulle ge alla de centrala aktörerna fördelar även om man förlorade. Man behövde inte vinna. Att förlora vara att vinna hävdar Wolff.

Once he lost, Trump would be both insanely famous and a martyr to Crooked Hillary. His daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared would be international celebrities. Steve Bannon would become the de facto head of the tea-party movement. Kellyanne Conway would be a cable-news star. Melania Trump, who had been assured by her husband that he wouldn’t become president, could return to inconspicuously lunching. Losing would work out for everybody

5. När det omöjliga plötsligt verkade bli verklighet var stämningen…kanske inte riktigt den man skulle ha förväntat sig.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Election Night, when the unexpected trend — Trump might actually win — seemed confirmed, Don Jr. told a friend that his father, or DJT, as he calls him, looked as if he had seen a ghost. Melania was in tears — and not of joy.

6. Sedan kom enligt Wolff den Trumpska metamorfosen.

There was, in the space of little more than an hour, in Steve Bannon’s not unamused observation, a befuddled Trump morphing into a disbelieving Trump and then into a horrified Trump. But still to come was the final transformation: Suddenly, Donald Trump became a man who believed that he deserved to be, and was wholly capable of being, the president of the United States.

7. De flesta i Trumps kampanj hade ingen erfarenhet av att leda en administration och rollen som stabschef skulle komma att bli av yttersta vikt. Trump ville anställa sin svärson för jobbet. Den krävdes enligt Wolff några oförskönade meningar av den konservativa mediepersonligheten Ann Coulter för att avstyra Trump.

It was Ann Coulter who finally took the president-elect aside. “Nobody is apparently telling you this,” she told him. “But you can’t. You just can’t hire your children.”

8. Jobbet verkade gå till Reince Priebus som hade lett det republikanska partiet en tid och som var partietablissemangets trygga val. En man som kunde politik och Washington. Men han var själv tveksam efter att ha varit med om några möten med Trump. Han fick goda råd av folk som hade mer erfarenhet av Trump, skriver Wolff.

“In an hour meeting with him, you’re going to hear 54 minutes of stories, and they’re going to be the same stories over and over again. So you have to have one point to make, and you pepper it in whenever you can.”

9. När Trump hade tagit emot en delegation från Silicon Valley i Trump Tower i december innan han svurit sin tjänste-ed, ringde mediagiganten Rubert Murdoch till Trump för att höra hur mötet gick. Trump hade varit välvilligt inställd till teknologicheferna önskan om flera visum för högt utbildade utländska arbetstagare. Murdoch var föga imponerad och sa att det inte skulle se bra ut med tanke på Trumps stränga invandringspolitiska åsikter. Det fixar sig försäkrade Trump, men Murdoch var inte road.

“What a fucking idiot,” said Murdoch, shrugging, as he got off the phone.

10. Wolff beskriver också en middag i New York och en konversation mellan dåvarande chefen för Fox News, Roger Ailes, och Bannon, som lett Breitbart News, den andra stora konservativa mediemaskinen. Något överraskande spelar den konservativa höken John Boltons mustasch en central roll i dialogen.

Bannon said he’d tried to push John Bolton, the famously hawkish diplomat, for the job as national-security adviser. Bolton was an Ailes favorite, too.

“He’s a bomb thrower,” said Ailes. “And a strange little fucker. But you need him. Who else is good on Israel? Flynn is a little nutty on Iran. Tillerson just knows oil.”

“Bolton’s mustache is a problem,” snorted Bannon. “Trump doesn’t think he looks the part. You know Bolton is an acquired taste.”

“Well, he got in trouble because he got in a fight in a hotel one night and chased some woman.”

“If I told Trump that,” Bannon said slyly, “he might have the job.”

11. Diskussionen mellan Bannon och Ailes fortsatte enligt Wolff. Nu kom Putin med i bilden.

“What has he gotten himself into with the Russians?” pressed Ailes.

“Mostly,” said Bannon, “he went to Russia and he thought he was going to meet Putin. But Putin couldn’t give a shit about him. So he’s kept trying.”

12. Näst i turen var Kina. Det nya Nazityskland enligt Bannon, hävdar Wolff.

“China’s everything. Nothing else matters. We don’t get China right, we don’t get anything right. This whole thing is very simple. China is where Nazi Germany was in 1929 to 1930. The Chinese, like the Germans, are the most rational people in the world, until they’re not. And they’re gonna flip like Germany in the ’30s. You’re going to have a hypernationalist state, and once that happens, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle.”

13. Wolff går vidare i sin exposé och beskriver dottern Ivankas och svärsonen Jared Kushners tankar om vem som egentligen skulle bli den första kvinnliga presidenten.

Between themselves, the two had made an earnest deal: If sometime in the future the opportunity arose, she’d be the one to run for president. The first woman president, Ivanka entertained, would not be Hillary Clinton; it would be Ivanka Trump.

14. Bannon kunde inte tro sina öron när han hörde om det.
“They didn’t say that?” he said. “Stop. Oh, come on. They didn’t actually say that? Please don’t tell me that. Oh my God.”

15. Familjen Trump vill gärna visa upp en varm och kärleksfull fasad, men Wolff tecknar en annorlunda bild. En där dottern Ivanka öppet hånar sin faders hår inför sina vänner.

She treated her father with a degree of detachment, even irony, going so far as to make fun of his comb-over to others. She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate — a contained island after scalp-reduction ­surgery — surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray. The color, she would point out to comical effect, was from a product called Just for Men — the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair color.

16. Wolff ger läsarna ett titthål in i Vita husets privata residens där tandkräm och Big Mac-hamburgare lär oss om presidentens psyke.

He ­reprimanded the housekeeping staff for picking up his shirt from the floor: “If my shirt is on the floor, it’s because I want it on the floor.” Then he imposed a set of new rules: Nobody touch anything, especially not his toothbrush. (He had a longtime fear of being poisoned, one reason why he liked to eat at McDonald’s — nobody knew he was coming and the food was safely premade.) Also, he would let housekeeping know when he wanted his sheets done, and he would strip his own bed.

17. Och Trumps arbetsmetoder var otraditionella..

He didn’t read. He didn’t really even skim. Some believed that for all practical purposes he was no more than semi-­literate. He trusted his own expertise ­— no matter how paltry or irrelevant — more than anyone else’s. He was often confident, but he was just as often paralyzed, less a savant than a figure of sputtering and dangerous insecurities, whose instinctive response was to lash out and behave as if his gut, however confused, was in fact in some clear and forceful way telling him what to do. It was, said Walsh, “like trying to figure out what a child wants.”

Vita huset avfärdade Wolffs bok idag som strunt och osann till stora delar.
Wolff själv säger sig ha gjort 200 intervjuer. Han fick tillåtelse att vistas nästan permanent i Vita huset efter att Trump tog över. Nästan inga regler för hur han kunde använda alla samtal och intervjuer fastställdes enligt Wolff. Detta för att Vita huset inte var välorganiserat nog hävdar han. Resultatet är nu till påseende och jag är säker på att man i Vita huset frågar sig varför inga regler för intervjuerna etablerades.
